One of the most difficult things in the world that you will ever need to deal with is the death of your parents. Here from the start of your life, it’s impossible to imagine the world without them. Unfortunately, everybody meets their maker one day and it is up to us who are left behind to clean up and ensure everything is taken care of. As if dealing with the loss of a parent wasn’t hard enough, you will need to piece together a full detail of their house so that you can sell it properly. Selling the home of a deceased parent is nothing like a normal sale. Here are just some of the things you will need to consider that you may not have thought of;

How Good Is The House?

As potentially the family home, you may have more good memories than bad. However, as we get older, we get a little bit lazier and therefore standards can slip. You need to check the quality of the house in terms of design, style and overall quality before you can sell. If your parent did not maintain the house fully in their later years, it could need a fair bit of work done to it. If you are looking to sell a property in Texas, you want to make it as efficient as possible.

Agree With Family

You will need to agree with other relatives about the price of the house and what you will sell it for. The worst part about this is that most of your family will live all across the country, or the world, so reaching a conclusion to the sale can be long and drawn out. Make sure you all agree on the price, the split and everything else that comes with it.

Be Patient

One of the most important things you can do when selling is be patient. Dealing with it all straight after the death can be nearly impossible, so don’t  worry about leaving it a short while. Acting sooner rather than later is good, of course, but don’t think it’s an instant priority that you need to deal with through your grief.

Clear It Out

Another key part of this is that if your parent(s) lived in the home for many years, they may have a lot of stuff hoarded up. From stuff of yours as a child to nice little gifts they pick up over the years, all of this stuff has to be taken or sold on elsewhere. Having a full clear-out of their things can be emotionally devastating, but it has to be done if you want to make a sale. If there is plenty left in the end that you simply cannot budge, you can pay a cleanout firm to come and do it for you – but beware the price, it can be quite a lot.

Dealing with bereavement is never, ever easy. You need to make sure that you get the right type of help to make the sale as easy as possible. If you are struggling to cope and need some professional advice on how to best handle the sale, then please contact us for a full consultation.
